ESA SKINSUIT
The SkinSuit is designed to simulate Earth’s gravity, counteracting the bone and muscle loss astronauts experience in space. It compresses the body from the shoulders to the feet, helping to reduce spinal lengthening, which can cause back pain and increase the risk of herniated discs upon return to Earth. Made from bidirectional elastic material, the SkinSuit provides vertical compression while ensuring comfort. Each suit is custom-made using over 150 body measurements. Developed in collaboration between ESA, Dainese D Tec, and academic institutions, it was first tested by Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen during the IRISS mission in 2015, followed by Thomas Pesquet during the Proxima mission in 2016.
