THE SPACE SHUTTLE SPACE SUIT
Well-known as the extravehicular mobility unit (EMU), this suit is designed for space walks by astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station. The EMU features fully autonomous life support (survival pack) and a communication system, functioning much like an individual spaceship.
The suit comprises several modular components: a rigid upper torso (which includes the portable life support system), a lower torso, and gloves. Each element is available in various sizes and can be combined to achieve a customized fit. The red stripes on the EMU help mission control distinguish between different space walkers. On the International Space Station, both the EMU and the Russian Orlan (sea eagle) suit are used for extravehicular activities.
