In parallel with the preparation of food for Andreas Mogensen’s mission, ALTEC collaborated with ESA to supply bonus food for Timothy Peake (British), who flew from November 2015 to May 2016 on the “Principia” mission. The food production was entrusted to the renowned British chef Heston Blumenthal. In this case, ALTEC’s role involved monitoring the chefs’ work to ensure they met the requirements, verifying the finished products through laboratory analyses, and managing logistics.


The interface for this project was with the NASA Food Lab, as the food was sent with a cargo operated by NASA. The recipes prepared were varied and typical of British cuisine. Notably, the Bacon Sarnie—a sandwich made with bread and bacon—was particularly interesting, as it managed to maintain excellent consistency and taste even in its canned packaging, according to the astronaut.
